What Is DIR? Understanding DIR Floortime

You may have heard your child’s therapist mention DIR Floortime, but what exactly does that mean?

DIR is a relationship-based therapy model that helps us understand how a child connects, communicates, learns, and interacts with the world around them. Rather than focusing only on individual skills such as saying a word, answering a question, or following a direction; DIR looks at the whole child and the developmental skills that support meaningful communication and relationships.

DIR stands for:

D — Developmental
Understanding where a child is developmentally and helping them build skills such as regulation, engagement, communication, and problem-solving.

I — Individual Differences
Recognizing that every child processes the world differently. This includes their sensory needs, motor abilities, communication style, and individual strengths and challenges.

R — Relationship-Based
Using meaningful relationships and interactions with caregivers, therapists, and others to support development.

So, What Is Floortime?

Floortime is one way we put DIR into practice and it doesn’t always happen on the floor! Instead of always directing the child toward an adult lead activity, we follow the child’s interests, join their play, and build interaction from there.

The goal isn’t simply to “let the child play.” The adult intentionally joins the interaction and helps the child connect, communicate, problem-solve, and expand their ideas.

What Does Floortime Look Like in Practice?

Follow the child’s lead:
Notice what has captured your child’s attention and join them there. If they’re interested in cars, bubbles, swinging, or even opening and closing a container, that interest can become the starting point for interaction.

Join their play:
Instead of immediately changing or directing the activity, become part of what your child is already doing. This helps build connection and shared enjoyment.

Create back-and-forth communication:
Respond to your child’s gestures, sounds, words, facial expressions, or actions and encourage them to respond back. These exchanges create “circles of communication” and help turn independent play into a shared interaction.

Gently expand the interaction:
Once you’re connected, add a small challenge. You might pause and wait for your child to communicate, introduce a new idea into the play, create a playful problem to solve, or encourage one more turn in the interaction.

Why Choose DIR Floortime?

Every child learns, communicates, and interacts with the world differently. DIR Floortime allows us to meet children where they are developmentally while building on their individual strengths and interests.

By focusing on connection and meaningful interactions, we can help children develop important skills such as communication, emotional regulation, social engagement, and problem-solving.

The goal is not just to teach individual skills, but to help children build the foundation they need to connect, communicate, and grow in their everyday lives.
