WHAT IS TOTAL COMMUNICATION?
Total Communication is an approach to communication intervention that encourages the use of all modes and methods of communication.
This includes:
- Spoken language
- Sign language
- Gestures
- Facial expressions
- Body language
- Written words
- Visual aids
- And any form of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC).
Essentially, it means utilizing any mode of communication that works best for the individual to facilitate functional and effective communication.
Why is this so important? Because all children have different strengths and areas of need, which means there is not a one-size/fits all way of teaching and accessing language!
At SPACE, we believe in honoring all modes of communication because it allows all children to have a voice. Regardless of the challenges a child might face, it is our job as Speech Language Pathologists (SLP’s) to adapt their environment and find tools that help children exercise the the right to: comment, request, refuse, express (ideas, feelings, preferences, etc.), ask/inquire (permission, information, details, etc.), make choices, and more.
